‘Bengal to Britain‘
Stepney Community Trust held an exciting project completion celebration event called ‘Bengal to Britain’, which showcased garments made from historic fashions and fabrics from the muslin trade era. The event was the outcome of an 18-month long project examining the shared history and linkages between wider Bengal and Britain from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
The special showcase exhibition was held at National Maritime Museum (Greenwich, London) on Thursday 26th September, 6pm-8pm and included a lecture by Sonia Ashmore, a short film, the launch of the book Bengal to Britain: Re-Creating Historic Fashions of the Muslin Trade and guided tours to The Traders Gallery (East India Company & Asia) by Curator of Decorative Arts & Material Culture Amy Miller.
The event showcased garments made by: Rehana Latif, Saif Osmani, Hilde Pollet, Momtaz Begum-Hossain, Lindsay Dupler, Eppie Evans, Lucky Hossain, Anjum Ishtiaq, Sima Rahman-Huang, Rifat Wahhab and Fathema Wahid.
